    Hey, Look
    by Simon Rich
    [from the New Yorker]

What I imagined the people around me were saying when I was . . .

    Eleven:

“Oh, man, I can’t believe that kid Simon missed that ground ball! How pathetic!”

“Wait. He’s staring at his baseball glove with a confused expression on his face. Maybe there’s something wrong with his glove and that’s why he messed up.”

    “Yeah, that’s probably what happened.”

    ————

    Twelve:

“Did that kid sitting behind us on the bus just get an erection?”

“I don’t know. For a while, I thought that was the case, but now that he’s holding a book on his lap it’s impossible to tell.”

“I guess we’ll never know what the situation was.”

    ————

    Thirteen:

“Hey, look, that thirteen-year-old is walking around with his mom!”

    “Where?”

    “There—in front of the supermarket!”

“Oh, my God! That kid is way too old to be hanging out with his mom. Even though I’ve never met him, I can tell he’s a complete loser.”

“Wait a minute. He’s scowling at her and rolling his eyes.”

“Oh, yeah . . . and I think I just heard him curse at her, for no reason.”

“I guess he’s cool after all.”

    ————

    Fourteen:

“Why does that kid have a black ‘X’ on the back of his right hand?”

“I bet it’s because he went to some kind of cool rock concert last night.”

“Wow. He must’ve stayed out pretty late if he didn’t have time to scrub it off.”

“Yeah, and that’s probably why his hair is so messy and dirty—because he cares more about rocking out than conforming to society.”

“Even though he isn’t popular in the traditional sense, I respect him from afar.”

    ————

    Fifteen:

“Hey, look, that kid is reading ‘Howl,’ by Allen Ginsberg.”

“Wow. He must be some kind of rebel genius.”

“I’m impressed by the fact that he isn’t trying to call attention to himself.”

“Yeah, he’s just sitting silently in the corner, flipping the pages and nodding, with total comprehension.”

“It’s amazing. He’s so absorbed in his book that he isn’t even aware that a party is going on around him, with dancing and fun.”

“Why aren’t any girls going over and talking to him?”

“I guess they’re probably a little intimidated by his brilliance.”

    “Well, who wouldn’t be?”

“I’m sure the girls will talk to him soon.”

“It’s only a matter of time.”

    ————

    Sixteen:

“Hey, look, it’s that kid Simon, who wrote that scathing poem for the literary magazine.”

“You mean the one about how people are phonies? Wow—I loved that poem!”

“Me, too. Reading it made me realize for the first time that everyone is a phony, including me.”

“The only person at this school who isn’t a phony is Simon.”

“Yeah. He sees right through us.”

    Drip, Drip, Drop?
    Drip, Drip, Drop!

Hey, it's good to be home (which hawaii finally feels like). I don't know what it is about this place but it's so much easier to make music here. I just kind of sat down yesterday afternoon and a bunch of hours later I had an 8 and a half minute song that I'm really really happy with. Like any song I'll probably still change it a little, but I hope that in it's current state it brightens your break as much as it did mine.

Kids up in Portland: Have a lot of fun and take lots of pictures
Kids in Marin: I'm jealous, go on some hikes and have fun

See you in a small handful of days

    oldest trick in the book
I looked online today to see if anybody had figured out an easy way to bring ipods back to life after they catch the dreaded click of death, and came across an article somebody wrote about throwing theirs out of a 3 story window due to frustration, only to find that the impact somehow fixed it. I figured it was worth a try (my ipod hasn't been able to turn on all year) so I threw it at the ground pretty hard, and the hard drive actually started up, but it still couldn't play any music, so I banged it around a little more, and now it works perfectly. With all this newfangled technologons it's easy to forget how humans have traditionally fixed broken electronics, but I guess the old tricks still work.

So as a blanket response to any technological problems, if it looks like it'll still be in one piece after you hit it really hard, and it doesn't work any way, you might as well give it a whack and see if a little entropy can sort it out.

    happy b-lated st. p'z day

JAMES BROWN IS DEAD (the musical)

I didn't even know this song existed until I heard it yesterday.... BEFORE he even died, but I guess it's true now.

Merry Christmas and happy times to everyone, I need to catch up on a lot of hanging out with all of you when I get back

What are you doing in my house

Woo, I'm in Hawaii for the week, which probably should be more exciting, but I think I'd rather be in California hanging out with buddies than being stuck on an island. I guess it's nice to spend time with my family, and it really clears your head to be this far away from everything. I've had plenty of time to waste on stuff like this song, which I think is pretty cool. It's kind of like a sequel to this other song I made senior year, which I made because every other song I was making was too repetative and sounded the same. If you have time, give both a listen and tell me what you think.

I'll be back home right after Christmans, so I'll see you all then.
Also: I can not fucking wait for new years )

I just had a teacher email me and warn me of "Impending doom" in one of my classes... it's going to be a really really rough end to the quarter. I'm probably going to go into hibernate and do work all the time mode - this should be great

I forgot my laptop charger, but I can at least borrow somebody else's every once in a while
I forgot the cord for my new digital camera, but I guess I can go back and get that
But the one thing for which there is no remedy, is the fact that I forgot to see Back to the Future the Musical.

I read the comics for the first time in a long while today, I've never looked at Rex Morgan before.... I thought it was some super hero thing but I'm pretty sure it's just a comic about golf.
